About Us
When We Met:
Heidi and I met at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, IL in 1994. I graduated in 1997 with a bachelor degree in Church Education and Psychology and Heidi graduated in 1998 with a bachelor degree in English/Secondary Education. We got married in May 1998 after Heidi graduated.
In 1997, after graduating from Trinity, I accepted a call to Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Lansing, Illinois where I served as a full-time Minister of Youth and Education. Heidi taught sixth grade at Southwest Christian Middle School in Oak Lawn, Illinois after she graduated from Trinity in 1998. In July 2000, we both left our jobs in Illinois so that I could begin my seminary education at Calvin Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
What We Do:
We moved to Sunnyside, Washington in August 2003 where I have begun my work as Pastor of Congregational Life at Sunnyside Christian Reformed Church (Christian Reformed Church in North America). My ministry includes youth ministry, family ministry and helping to improve the caring & enfolding ministry of our church. I also have opportunity to plan and lead worship each week which includes preaching at least 25% of the time.
In November 2003 the church gave me her blessing to begin a chaplaincy ministry with the Sunnyside Fire Department and Yakima County Fire District 5. Sunnyside Fire has not had a chaplain in many years and Yakima County Fire has never had a chaplain so these are exciting opportunities to serve the community as well as being an ambassador of Christ in the midst of tragedy & chaos. This ministry has even expanded into the Sunnyside Police Department. The SPD does have a chaplain but we're working hard at being available to each other's departments as well.
Besides being promoted to full time mom, Heidi has completed her Master in Education at Calvin College last year (May 2005). Church activities keep her busy in the areas of worship planning, coffee break, youth ministry and several other areas where needed. She'll also be mentoring a couple of new teachers at Sunnyside Christian School in the coming year.
On the side, Heidi and I enjoy mountain biking and snow skiing. Additionally, I enjoy golf (though I am a terrible golfer) and music while Heidi enjoys working on her Creative Memories photo albums, drama and reading. We've both taken a new interest in digital video editing but we both have a lot to learn in that area too.
